The majestic Djebel Murdjadjo overlooks the city of Oran, extending to the west, dominating the Oran region of Algeria. The steep rocky crags of the mountain range eventually taper westward forming a long flat plateau. Perched on top of Djebel Murdjadjo is the imposing Spanish-built Santa Cruz Fortress, with the Our Lady of Santa Cruz Basilica nearby, standing as reminders of past conflicts and the seeking of solace.
With the theme of “Better City – Better Life” the city of Shanghai in China will be hosting the 2010 Shanghai World Expo from 1 May through to 31 October 2010. Of the 191 countries that were issued with official invitations from China’s central government to participate in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, Algeria was among the first countries to respond. On 13 November 2008, Algeria’s commissioner general for the Expo, Bensalem Mohamed, met with deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, Zhou Hanmin, to sign the necessary paperwork for participation in the Expo.
The oasis city of Tamanrasset in southern Algeria will once again host the Tin Hinan Festival in 2009. The organizers of the event, Ahaggar’s Friends Association, have confirmed that twenty-six African countries, along with Arab and European countries will feature in the festival which is to be held on 23-24 February 2009. Chairman of the Ahaggar’s Friends Association, Samadat Chikh, noted that the festival will highlight the Taureg culture while at the same time focusing on women, in honor of Queen Tin Hinan.
The Star Academy reality show was banned from Algeria, but as this is one of the most popular shows in the Arab World, Algeria has decided to broadcast an Islamic adaptation of the show. The Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Algerian TV have worked together to find a balance with regard to the show, and at the end of October, Alhan Wa Shabab, meaning Rhythms and Youth, will begin. To make the show even more exciting, a special guest artist has been invited to perform at the premier.
Supporters of the Algerian national football team admit to having mixed emotions as their team heads off to Liberia on 9 October in preparation for their critical match against the Liberian team on Saturday for combined qualifiers to the Africa Cup of Nations and 2010 World Cup. In order to proceed in the tournaments, the greens (as the team is often referred to) need the three points that a win on Saturday will give them.
